The Riverwalk Is Better When You Don’t Have a Plan

The Augusta Riverwalk is not complicated.

That is part of the appeal.

It runs along the Savannah River downtown, close enough to the Morris Museum of Art and the Augusta Museum of History that you can turn a walk into a whole afternoon if you feel like it.

But you do not have to.

Go when nobody needs anything from you

Walk far enough to feel like you went somewhere. Sit down before you start checking how many steps you got. Look across the river.

If you have kids with you, there is room for that. If you have somebody who just needs to get out of the house for an hour, there is room for that too.

Pair it with one thing, not six

If you want to make more of the afternoon, pick one nearby stop. The Morris if you want art. The history museum if that is more your speed. Or walk over to The Boll Weevil Cafe & Sweetery and get lunch or a piece of cake.

One thing.

Not every outing needs to become a campaign.

Then go home

There is something to be said for getting back before everybody is tired enough to start irritating each other.

You saw the river. You got outside. Nobody had to rush.

That is enough.
