Paddle one day. Wander the next.

The canal and lake are only part of the trip. Keep a second day open for the trails, a meal downtown, or a slow morning at the house.

You don't need to own a kayak to spend a morning on the water around Augusta. Several local outfitters rent boats and help with routes. Start with the experience you want, not just the closest launch. A gentle canal float and a moving river are very different days.

01 / Best first paddle

Augusta Canal

Savannah Rapids Park, Martinez · About 5 miles · Usually 2–2½ hours

Start near the historic headgates and follow the canal downstream to Lake Olmstead. Savannah Rapids Kayak Rental describes this as its beginner-friendly route, with a return shuttle available. The outfitter currently lists single kayaks at $30 and tandem kayaks at $40 per trip, plus shuttle fees. Confirm rates and reservations before leaving.

02 / Guided river experience

Savannah River & Stallings Island

Savannah Rapids area · Route and difficulty depend on water conditions

The river offers a more active outing, including routes around Stallings Island and sections with current and rocks. For less experienced paddlers, ask about a guided trip rather than heading out alone. Dam releases can change river conditions quickly; follow your outfitter's advice and stay well clear of locks and spillways.

03 / Quieter water

Betty's Branch

Riverside Park, Evans · Route choice varies

For visitors who prefer a creek-and-backwater setting, Betty's Branch is another option in the Augusta area. Check with a local outfitter for launch instructions, rental availability and current conditions before committing to a route.

04 / Open-water scenery

Clarks Hill Lake

Appling and surrounding lake access points · Exposed water can get windy

For a bigger horizon, head toward Clarks Hill Lake. Choose a sheltered launch and check the forecast: open water and boat traffic can be less forgiving than a protected canal. Mistletoe State Park offers seasonal kayak rentals only to its own overnight guests, so Artful Ansley guests should not count on renting there. Bring your own boat or arrange a separate lake outfitter.
